The world changed at the end of The Book of Daniel.

By August 2058, the United States is openly at war, the southern border is collapsing under pressure, and the military is scrambling. Desperate to stem the invasion and survive threats it was never built to face. And at the center of that chaos are the Chimeras.

Engineers as soldiers, trained from birth, and expected to fight and die for the country that created them. But they now face a questions no laboratory bothered to answer:

Are they soldiers, property, or citizens?

When three Chimera troops are accused of killing an American officer, Daniel Penn is pulled into an investigation where the verdict is already guilty, and the penalty is already death. Captain Penn is ordered to produce a convenient result. Instead, the case exposes abuse, torture, political pressure, greed, and a government trying to apply military law to beings it considers property. So the contradiction becomes impossible to ignore.

Penn's answer is the Second Special Service Force, an experimental mixed-species, multinational unit. American soldiers with a penchant for trouble-making, elite Canadian volunteers, and Chimeras. Toss in a few unconventional specialist and weapons programs that probably should have come with better adult supervision. Its members have to become a unit while much of the military is still deciding whether the Chimeras deserve to exist at all.

But The Dogs of War is not only about who gets to wear the uniform.

It is about loyalty, prejudice, citizenship, command, sacrifice, faith, institutional cowardice, and what happens when soldiers become more honorable than the people deciding whether they count as human. And while everyone is arguing... something new is already spreading.
